I just finished Bryson's 'A Walk in the Woods' and it was very entertaining. I really enjoy the mix of adventure, humor and scientific knowledge in this book. I think I will read his book on Australia next.
I'm also reading a book on the Algerian Crisis of 1952-60, which created such havoc in North Africa and metropolitan France.
I am just about through with Diarmaid McCulloch's work on the Prostestant Reformation and it is quite enlightening. One can not speak of a reformation but of reformations concerning this pivotal event in western history. As usual the simple gives way to the complex when one scrutinizes.

mr. christian, the bryson books are always entertaining! i have the australia book In a Sunburned Country i think it's called and it's amazing. the place names in australia are a huge source of comedy the bryson take full advantage of.

i'm wrapping up American Gods right now. first bit of fantasy i've read in a long time and well worth the effort. i can see why it's so popular. i just discovered there is a movie coming out based on an earlier novel by neil gaiman called Stardust. don't know much about it but you can see the trailer here: http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/stardust.html;_ylt=AnFpTY9RR7LWQb.l...

it's got robert de niro and the lovely michelle pfiefer. looks promising!
