Synopsis
Several millenia in the future, Earth has become a backwater planet ignored by others in its galaxy. Its one jewel is Cirque, the city on the Abyss, into which the river Fundament falls in magnificent cataracts. It is a city of love and harmony, with inspiring religious rites. But in that abyss there lives the beast: loathsome to imagine, frightening to confront, for it is formed of the cast off hates of the people of Cirque. A beast whose body is refuse, whose mind is as black as sin, and now, after centuries, it is climbing out of the abyss to claims its own.
