There is no doubting that The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay is a beautifully written novel. You can get lost in Chabon's phrasing and how accurately he captures specific emotions that you never even thought to put into words before. The setting of New York during the build up to WW2 is wonderfully captured and evocative. I am a huge fan of comic books, so Chabon's exploration of the origins of the superhero kept my attention throughout. The characterization of Joe and Sammy was superb as well. My quibble with the novel was the plotting. With all the other things going right in the novel I was hoping for a few more surprises. At its center the novel is a simple love triangle story. Definitely worth reading for the language alone, but not quite the tour de force I was hoping for out of a Pulitzer prize winner with a genre lean.
