Nicely written, shoritsh 'coming of age abruptly' fantasy tale. Heavy on names/races to begin with, but thankfully not too much magic or other fantasy terminology to wrap the head around. The action is jumped right into and you're not assaulted by a thousand sub plots and meandering fantasy jibber jabber over 1000 pages, there is very little filler or fluff. The book is very much an intro to the rest of the story, you barely get very much information about who anyone is or what their motivations are by the time book 1 ends. I kind of like the length, it was easy enough to read that I'll probably continue the series eventually.
