Taken as a whole, and ignored as the sum of three parts, the Foundation trilogy makes up for it's own issues in the end. I thought the first book was okay. The second I found mired in classism/sexism/racism/agism, and fairly flakey with the introduction of its ultimate plot device. The third was a good conclusion, but still a little too preachy and full of Asimovs typical endless-red-herrings. Even with his red herrings I immediately saw through book 2 and book 3, maybe I've now read too much Asimov to see through it all.
This trilogy is fairly satisfying in the end, merely because it takes place over ~420 years and involves drama, spying, treachory, and pretty much everything else spaced out over a galaxy. As a classic it is good in its own regard, but the style and particularities are still heavily 'old timey'.
