One of the things I love most about Vernon/Kingfisher's works - something I never expected from someone who ostensibly writes "childrens' books" - is the way that she avoids cloying saccharine sweetness, instead creating characters full of pragmatism, hope, and snark.
This is very much an adult quest fantasy adventure which combines derring-do with bureaucracy, humor, darkness, sly wit, and hope. Also gnoles.
Highly recommended. So highly-recommended I can't even tell you how high the recommendation is, but I'm pretty sure that it's somewhere in the earth's outer orbit.
