While not an original plot, I thought that this was a well-done, unique, and enjoyable version of it. I suspect that gamers will enjoy it even more than I did. Though there are some higher-math concepts involved in the story, which may or may not be understandable to the reader, I think it's possible to get the gist of the concepts and how they relate to the story without actually needing to fully understand them.
