This 1977 Hugo Winner gives the reader lots to think about. Severe climate change, plague and infertility cause a disastrous situation for humanity. The story follows a large "prepper" family that retreats to a secluded valley. There, they make and execute plans for their survival through cloning and controlled breeding. They survive, but there are high costs and unexpected consequences. The culture that evolves is an interesting examination of cloning and the needs of the community versus that of the individual.
