It is clear 50 years after publication that this work was nominated for a Nebula because of its topic, not because of the quality of the work itself. The first half of the book is slow and repetitious, and when the focus is finally turned on, the work becomes preachy and reads more like a lecture than a story.
The conclusions the author comes to regarding incest and its place in human morals are, to say the least, uninformed and poorly presented.
To use a metaphor: A clean swing and a miss.
