As is my habit, About 1/2 way through this book I went and checked out the reviews of this book and I was surprised by how the people who did not like this book were venomous about their dislike. This is a book that is going to appeal to a certain type of post-apocalypse reader. This is a slow burn kind of book. My heart never raced during the reading of it, but it did break at times. When the protagonist, Hig, goes through his crisis and chooses to leave the relative safety of his home at the airport, I felt he was on a death mission, a sort of purposeful death by misadventure. I did not understand the action, but it did add new characters and scenery. No one in this novel was all evil. Even the worst people in the novel were just trying to survive in the post apocalyptic world. Although I do feel like with 99% of the worlds population gone, fighting for resources seems sort of odd, but there was the whole climate change issues, so maybe water resources really were that short.
All in all I found a lot to like about this story, but if you as a reader are looking for action, there are better examples of the genre.
