I quite liked the original short story, it had an eerie and mysterious atmosphere. The novel kinda tries too hard to lift the veil of mystery and show all the warts underneath. In my opinion that completely negates the atmosphere of the first part, so we're left with a vanilla lost-world adventure.
We have our brave hearted adventurers, we have our damsel (ok, the damsel is a bit of a kick-ass, which is refreshing, given the period when this was written).
It is readable and fun, not too cerebral, but the end is very anticlimactic.
