So/so.

It's a very character driven story, with four viewpoint characters. But, aside from the captain, who is a bona fide badass, I plainly didn't like the rest of the protagonists. There is the orphan girl that needs to smuggle a buttload of money, who is totally "I'm a dangerous woman with in depth knowledge of commerce" one second, and a crying sobbing drunk the next. She's super confused one second, and super determined the next. Next we have the lovable dork, who likes books, but has to work with swords and shields. And then he goes and decides to commit what is considered a major war crime, even in a medieval setting. Finally, we have the politico who schemes around the throne, but has a noble heart, but actually is a bigot with a silver spoon.

An additional peeve is that a lot is made of there being thirteen different human races, but to be honest, I was not really able to distinguish most of them - just some names on a page.

There are plenty of hints that this is played against a larger and more important backdrop, but I don't feel that I would continue the series.
