I was pleasantly surprised to find this book on WWE because reading Toni Morrison is such a treat, and I don't think of her books as being traditionally "speculative fiction." Her writing is fantastic. The story is heartwrenching and important. My one quibble with WWE is that this book is categorized as fantasy, when it really seems like a horror novel. This is a ghost story on every level - it's not just a personal horror story, but a story about the systemic horrors of slavery and racism. The characters are hautned by their lives under slavery - a haunting that does take the form of an actual ghost, but also the form of memories, traumas, and physical scars.
