This is top shelf literary SF on par with LORD OF LIGHT in my opinion. Zelazny is up there with the new wave greats. The story is intentionally confusing and "trippy" or dreamy but it all comes together in a climax that is built up to exponentially over the course of this short book. It will be helpful to brush up on some Nordic mythology to get the full impact, or at least don't be afraid to look up some of the references if you need to. It really added to my enjoyment, especially the closer it got to the end. There are some Walt Whitman and classical music references that make it quite a fun read as well. Superb 4/5
