Makes an improvement of the Doomsday Book to which this story is only loosely related. I found the narrative much lighter to the point of taking on a lear comedic quality.
Attempts throughout to better address the science fiction aspects, although I still feel it fails to become truly scientific in its approach. To echo my earlier comments of the first novel, I am surprised this won the Hugo and the Locus, other than to say it is technically very well written.
Draws interesting elements out of a less notable time period compared to the Doomsday Book which is to say that it relies more on traditional storytelling.
Again by no means a fast paced read but it is certainly entertaining.
Snippets of real world history throughout create a learning experience, most of the introduced characters in one way or another add to this.
Overall a solid read with few specific flaws. Despite the fact that it will not satisfy Sf genre readers you can't really hold that against it.
4/5
