After 2500 year the descendants of colonists stranded on Pern have long forgotten their fabulous technology and settled into a sort of mediaeval way of life, on a planet where sporadically deadly Thread falls from the sky. Slowly over the centuries men have struggled to fight the menace, and now the latest generation are determined to succeedin its final destruction. With the help of a supercomputer unearthed from the ancient first landing site, the characters we have followed over the series now have a plan that will involve dragons, fire lizards, the original space ships up above, and use reawakened technology too. Superbly enjoyable as we finally have the satisfaction of seeing the triumph over thread, leavened with the sad demise of a major character. This book with its detailed clever plan, elements of time travel, angry opposition from traditionalists who try to destroy our friends plans, is fast paced and full of exitement and all in all a worthy finale to the story of 2500 years struggle against Thread.
Of course the idea of resurrecting so much technology over a short period of 4 years is actually preposterous, but McCaffrey skilfully skims ovver this, and I for one went in total suspension of disbelief just to enjoy the triumph of these characters who had striven so long and hard. Great fun, and an excellent read.
