This was my first experience with the author Mieville, other than that he is an accomplished and decorated author is about the extent of my prior knowledge.
PSS was hard to get orientated into at first. The location is abstract and vast. A good portion of the first part is spent on world building but you can be sure that with the inherent oddity of the setting lends to the narrative device that the additional nuances of the world will be uncovered throughout as a major plot device.
That being said the narrative quality is very high. However, I did get a little lost in the fantasy heavy, science fiction light qualities of the books theme. Also some of the wordplay bordered on being deliberately verb heavy to the point of being laughable and when taken apart from the narrative oftentimes generally absurd. Action heavy and satisfying on the whole; but not necessarily as refined and poignant as it could have been with more concise writing.
3.5/5
