Of all the pessimistic end-of-world fiction that sprang from the womb of the atomic age, On the Beach is as powerful and disturbing as any. A rather glum and depressing look at people simply living and trying to cope with what they know is inexorably coming their way. Though we know the ending before we begin, the book is still well worth the journey. A modern classic in my opinion.
