Immobility

I cannot read post-nuclear-apocalyptic stores without imaging the landscapes from the long run of low-budget Mad Max variations the lasted through the 1980's. Evanson doesn't stray too far from the conventions of the genre. His landscape consists of hot zone, ruined cities, rival communities, and the quest for a vial of frozen something that many people will die for. Many plot points are easy to see coming, but he does have a few surprises -- depressing surprises -- held close to his chest.

What Evanson brings to the enterprise is a spare style and excellent characterizations. He gives you characters to cheer on, to mourn, and to despise. And he does it quickly and efficiently without stinting on atmospherics that create his ruined landscape thirty years after nuclear attacks.
