First, I highly recommend the audiobook version of this narrated by Tom Stechschulte.
The Road is depressing and beautiful. It strips away the trappings of the rest of the post-apocalyptic genre--the action, adventure (small or epic), zombies, politics--leaving only hope and hopelessness.
When I first finished it I thought, "Well that was certainly ok and as depressing as people said." But as it has sat with me over the last day it has grown inside me. I feel like the story is unfinished, not because the book should have kept going, but I am grasping for a happy ending. I want to know that things turned out ok. But this isn't that kind of book. It's a book that I rate 5 stars because I can't stop thinking about it, I can't stop hoping that even though I'm not watching it anymore the story continued offscreen.
