After reading McCarthy's Blood Meridian, I was reluctant to read another of his books. I had been forewarned about its violence, and it wasn't as bloody as I had prepared myself for, but it was the writing itself, the story telling, that didn't live up to Mc Carthy's reputation. The Road was a pleasant surprise, although pleasant really isn't the right word. It isn't a pleasant story; it's dark, dangerous and foreboding. It's future is more ominous than Lucifer's Hammer, The Stand, or even On The Beach. If you like heartwarming, this isn't for you. It is a post-apocalyptic story of good in the face of hopelessness; the goodness of the boy, and the unselfish love of his father.
