Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes
Broken Monsters is more of a thriller than a horror novel. The short chapters and lots of characters keep the pace of this book fast making it difficult to put down. It is set in present day Detroit, land of abandoned houses and the unemployed. Detective Versado is trying to solve a murder - a gruesome murder, where the top half of the victim has been attached to the bottom of a deer. TK, a homeless man, Layla, Detective Versado's daughter, and Jonno, a journalist, get caught up in the action. Layla and her teenage friends were a bit annoying, but their contribution to the story did highlight the relevance and dangers of social media in society. The supernatural elements don't enter the story until the end. Honestly, the book would have been just as good without them.
