A man wakes up one day and the world as he knew it has ended. There are a few survivors and a great many people who didn't or won't make it. How to rebuild society?
Nowadays, more than 60 years after "The Day of the Triffids" was written, this seems like a very dated premise. However, at the time, it was quite new. And in 1951, for the first time in human history, the scenario was possible.
So, this book would be worth reading for the historical value alone. But there is more. Apart from a bit of missing technology (cell phones mostly) very little feels dated. Human reactions to the disaster are quite plausible. The different attempts to keep or recreate human society are well thought out and much more interesting than the logistics of getting food and fuel or of killing Triffids. They will stay with me for a while.
Highly recommended.
