Oh Joe Hill, What am I going to do with you. I have now read three of your books and I'm still unsure if I like you as a writer. The first novel I read of yours was NOS4A2. And I adored it. It was scary and creepy with just the right amount of darkness, like a young Steven King. The second novel I read was Heart-Shaped Box. I found this to be a disaster. I have now read this third book. I did enjoy this book. And I think it is great when a son wants to be like his Daddy, but in this case, it was maybe to much like his daddy. I kept seeing Stephen King stories in many of the plot twists of the The Fireman. A small child with the power to control fire(Firestarter). A small community where forced confinement leads to irrational worship of a martyr-like female character (The Mist).
As far as the book itself. I enjoyed it, and it kept my attention. I see cinematic potential in this book. So I guess I'm still not ready to give up on Joe Hill. Just when I think I'm out,he drags me back in again!
