An excellent novel!
When Pohl wrote the sequels, he modified the protagonist into a more malleable character, so the that the series would hang together better. While I can understand why this was necessary, it is a shame to lose Broadhead in his original incarnation - he was quite memorable.
The sequel is also good, but susequent books are rather less interesting. As usual, the quality drops off with each subsequent book. If I were to reread the series at some point, I would likely just read this one and Beyond the Blue Event Horizon, plus the Merchants of Venus - a couple of truly memorable titles!
