Can you prove you are not insane? If you spent 24 hours a day with people who were insane, how long would it take for you to start buying into others delusions? Less of a horror novel and more of an indictment of the mental health care industry, The Devil In Silver left me feeling just a bit uncomfortable. In the same way I felt uncomfortable after reading The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. But is this book really "muckracking?" I don't have an answer. I would like to think that the million tiny little abuses suffered by the patients in this book are exaggerated for poetic purposes, but a small and surprisingly vocal part of my brain suspects they might not be.
This was an incredibly well written story with characters so well developed that I felt I knew these characters, and I felt I was experiencing the events in the story.
4.5 of 5 stars (Man, I sure wish Goodreads allowed reviews with 1/2 stars.)
