History

Harcourt, Inc. began life in 1919, as "Harcourt Brace & Co.," publishing such authors as Carl Sandburg and Sinclair Lewis. Harcourt Brace & Company grew the press to the heights of status and prestige in the industry, with ground-breaking works from authors such as T.S. Eliot and C.S. Lewis. George Orwell's "Animal Farm" and "1984" were brought to us by Harcourt. The company name changed to "Harcourt Brace Jovanovich," in 1970, under the leadership of chairman William Jovanovich. HBJ was purchased by the General Cinema Corporation in 1991, and changed the name of the publishing portion of the business back to "Harcourt Brace & Company," and then shortened it to Harcourt, Inc. in 1999. Harcourt today publishes a wide range of genres, under several well- respected imprints, and is responsible for bringing us award- winning works from such SF/F authors as Ursula K. LeGuin and Arthur C. Clarke.
