I discovered McDevitt late in 2018, reading The Engines of God for a Goodreads group monthly read. Like the other McDevitt books I've read, A Talent for War was a solid space adventure with big ideas & it is a page-turner. There is a good, likeable main character, but he mainly provides the centerpoint for the the story to revolve around; the mystery is the main focus. Nothing wrong with that because you want to find out what happens next. I don't know why this book didn't garner the attention his later books got. Maybe that it's early in his career? At any rate, highly recommended.
